Landlord fined for failing to provide safety records

A landlord has been fined £11,500 for failing to provide gas safety records, it has emerged.

Individuals with rented property insurance might be interested to note Peter Brown, from Portsmouth, was taken to court for breaching the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and for failing to comply with an Improvement Notice, H&V News reports.

This led to a fine for endangering lives and Mr Brown – who admitted three charges – was also ordered to pay costs of £4,500.

Damp and mould caused by leaks were discovered in an inspection at one of his rented properties by Portsmouth City Council in 2009.

The local authority requested a copy of the Gas Safety Check record, but he had failed to provide one in two years.

This comes after the Electrical Safety Company recently urged landlords to ensure the electrics in their properties are safe, stating it is particularly important due to the growth in rented houses, the Guardian reported.
